Review by April Kranz
The past two years have proven just how many ways you can spin a pandemic into a song. I've heard it all; twenty-one pilots released Level of Concern, Luke Combs released Six Feet Apart. Dang it, I've even helped write a few COVID-inspired songs because what musician hasn't? But throughout the last two years, I have never heard a Christmas quarantine song. Though it did raise a question that's been on my mind for some time now: Is Santa vaccinated? Is he taking proper social distancing measures during this trying time? He's visiting a lot of people in one night. Is he wearing his mask correctly? Seasoned songwriter Paul DeMarco aims to get to the bottom of it.
This song oozes blues, starting with the classic single guitar strum and rich vocal runs through the first verse. The band kicks into the chorus, filled with plenty of Christmas puns and sexy walking bass-lines. The song follows the form again, picking up even more into an easy-going, wailing guitar solo. And the entire time, DeMarco asks; nay, demands the answer to the question we're all dying to know:
"Santa are you vaxxed?
Santa are you vaxxed?
And are you wearing your bright red mask
Visiting every house come rain or snow?
I don't wanna be a pain in your north pole,
But I hope you don't mind if I ask
Tell me Santa, woah oh Santa
Santa are you vaxxed?"
If you want a fun, catchy, punny addition to your holiday rotation this year, this song will fit right into your playlist. Break the seal in the event you need a bluesy party song that will make your Christmas guests laugh, bob their heads, and ponder the physical and moral implications of Santa Clause in the era of the Coronavirus.
