Heather O'Neill - HerSong Music Interview

Heather O'Neill is a singer-songwriter who musically travels off the beaten path. Her music reflects an edgy, alternative and dreamy style. If you are in a dreamy, thinky, unorthodox headspace , Heather O'Neill is an artists you will enjoy. Get to know Heather through HerSong's music interview. What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?

The Beatles and Thriller. I started playing guitar at 15 because I was obsessed with Courtney Love, but I didn't think about doing it as a career until my next obsession at 19, Ani DiFranco

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?

Again it was very Courtney Love inspired. It was terrible parody bad. Something about a fat girl in the corner. I'm cringing as I write this.

Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?

I play guitar. I used to work with an engineer/producer Dave Uhrich and a session bass player (Wally Huston) and drummer (Rick Vitek). Now I work with Mat Lejune an engineer and Stefan Clark who plays drums and bass and adds atmospherics on my stuff. I use the term producer loosely, because I'm a bit of a control freak. I don't have the technical ability in the studio so I rely on others to find the buttons and turn the dials, but I'm giving the direction.

What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?

I can really get locked into doing different things at different times. They have been times when I've been constantly playing out and my performing muscle is way tight. Other times I'm working a job or 2, living life, and writing. Gathering. Chopping wood and carrying water. That has it's place too. I like them both, but they are different.

Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?

Do it because you have to,

For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?

Ballerina in a Bullfight Glass Delusion.
