Deanna DeMola - HerSong Interview

Deanna DeMola is a Singer/Songwriter from Long Island whose lyrics and music invoke an alternative pop style. Influenced by Billie Eilish, Paramore, Halsey, her songs address personal and social challenges that have a very broad appeal and that she has had to overcome in order to maintain her strength and attain her goals. A few years ago, Deanna began to struggle with depression and anxiety. She felt lost and hopeless, but eventually she found solace in singing and playing music. Music gave her a voice to share her emotions and experiences. Currently, Deanna has finished working in the studio with Songwriter and Producer Jimmy Greco (Carlos Santana / Paramore / Jennifer Lopez / Train) on her debut EP, Under Construction. It includes six heartfelt original songs that represent her journey as an artist.

What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?

My earliest memory of music is probably when I was 3 years old and I was dancing on my coffee table in my living room with my twin sister while my Dad blasted "Shot Through The Heart" by Bon Jovi. I got started in music by taking guitar lessons when I was 16 years old. I immediately fell in love with it and would practice for hours on end everyday, eager to keep growing. I had always loved singing, but was too shy to do anything about it until my Dad heard me really sing for the first time when I was 17. He got me voice lessons and shortly after I got into songwriting and eventually working with my now producer and mentor Jimmy Greco.

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?

First song I ever wrote was called Sailor's Promise. It was very dark and depressing and totally not in the correct typical songwriting format. It wasn't terrible, but it is a song I wouldn't ever sing again. I've developed and grown so much since then, it's crazy to look back at that song and see where I'm at now.

I've always been into writing fiction stories growing up, so songwriting felt pretty natural to get into after I started learning guitar a little bit. I was inspired by listening to new artists and wanting to learn how to write catchy tunes that still tell a story. Songwriting is an outlet for me, so I really just pour my real life and how I feel into every song that I write. I need it to keep me sane.

Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?

I play guitar which I've been playing for about six and a half years now and I've recently been learning piano. I love guitar, it's my go to instrument when I write. But I'm really loving piano. I feel super connected to it, more so than guitar, I really would like to get better at it. Yeah so when I perform live, I perform with a band, they're awesome. They make my songs come to life on stage and just help add something extra to each show. My band is amazing to work with.

I do work with a producer. My producer is Grammy Nominated producer and songwriter Jimmy Greco. We've been working together for about 5 years now. He's my co-writer, director, mentor and friend. I owe so much of my artist development to him. He's an amazing human being and I'm so grateful to have him in my life and to share the relationship that we have.

What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?

My favorite part about being an artist is definitely songwriting and then going into the recording booth to make the song come to life. It's always an incredibly rewarding feeling to cut a song.

For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?

Definitely start with my latest release "Next Generation!" And then check out "Worst In Me."
